Legacy

Christ Junior College introduced IBDP curriculum at the campus in 2018 after a two years’ rigourous planning and authorization. In the last few years, we have grown in delivering the curriculum in such a way that our students are more open-minded, knowledgeable, principled and inquisitive about the world around them. The school’s approaches to teaching and learning have evolved to transform our learners into compassionate critical thinkers who understand the importance to act in an increasingly uncertain world, where challenges reach beyond borders. They are a significant link in the great legacy of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara and his vision of education; both as its beneficiaries and as its torchbearers.

Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara (1805-1871) founded the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), an indigenous order of Catholic priests that manages Christ Junior College - IBDP. He was a champion of social reform and founded the first Catholic Sanskrit School in 1846. He also established seminaries for education and formation of the clergy, a publishing house, a home for the dying and the destitute as well as schools for general education.

In 1831, Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara with the support of Fr. Thomas Palackal and Fr. Thomas Porukara started CMI, the first indigenous religious congregation for men in India. The CMI vision is to provide spiritual leadership and foster unity and growth of the community. The educational endeavours of CMI aims at forming leaders who are intellectually competent, spiritually mature, morally upright, psychologically integrated, physically healthy and socially acceptable; who will champion the cause of justice, love, truth and peace. The CMI believes in inclusive education and encourages students, parents and teachers to share this vision.

IB Philosophy

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is “a worldwide community of schools, educators and students with a shared mission to empower young people with the values, knowledge and skills to create a better and more peaceful world.” It is a not-for-profit educational foundation, a global leader in international education, that offers programmes that strives to “empower school-aged students to take ownership in their own learning and help them develop future-ready skills to make a difference and thrive in a world that changes fast.”

There are four key elements to an IB education and its philosophy: international mindedness, learner profile, a broad, balanced, conceptual and connected curriculum and its approaches to teaching and learning.

Christ Junior College is guided by the educational vision of the CMIs. A constant desire to set new benchmarks in quality education, focus on holistic education, fostering cooperation among all those who have a stake in the learner’s growth and the social commitment to fulfill one’s role in society to make it a better place for each and every one to live are the hallmarks of the CMI vision of education. It is well-encapsulated in the Vision of the Institution – Excellence and Service.

The International Baccalaureate and its curriculum share these ideals. The IBDP curriculum adds value to the service that CJC provides by the well- researched and fresh insights that it brings to the development of intellectual competence and skills of the learners while being rooted in one’s heritage. The emphasis it lays on academic development of the learner through development of reading skills, concept-driven transferable understanding, conceptualizing, analyzing, assimilating and applying it is revelatory. Character formation, communication skills and physical development which are integral to the learner’s personal, interpersonal and societal skills is integrated in the conceptualization of the curriculum itself. The IB education fosters ‘the dynamic environment’ in which each learner at CJC-IBDP can hope to achieve what the institution’s Mission states explicitly - holistic development to make effective contribution to the society.

Welcome to Christ Junior College – IBDP!

It is my pleasure to introduce the IB curriculum to all of you who are seeking admission at CJC-IBDP. As you must be aware, the IB curriculum is synonymous with a rigourous, quality education that prepares learners for the future. It enables them to make sense of the complexities of the world around them and provide them with the right attitude and inherent qualities of mind and character to take responsible action.

But I feel what makes the curriculum unique is how it develops international mindedness and critical thinking in learners. Developing international mindedness is the overarching aim of the IB. The IB does it by emphasizing on helping the learners to reflect on their own perspectives, cultures and identities and then that of others. At CJC-IBDP, we have integrated it by connecting the local to the global. Critical thinking skills are one of the ‘hows’ to develop international mindedness. In practice at CJC-IBDP, at a generic level, the Theory of Knowledge course and Extended Essay contribute immensely in helping the learner to become a critical thinker and at the subject specific level, the instructional strategies guided by the IB approaches to teaching and learning facilitate the process. Teachers consciously embed activities that promote development of critical thinking in their teaching plans. Further, one-on-one mentorship opportunities available in the research coursework in the curriculum further aid the process.

In order to progress towards a more peaceful and sustainable society it is imperative that learners value different beliefs and identities and make effort to collaborate with people and communities across cultures and disciplines.
